Acupuncture and Headaches/Migraines
Headaches and migraines can stem from a variety of medical conditions, including dental disorders, allergies, sinus diseases, brain tumors and head injuries. More commonly, headaches are caused by stress and muscle tension in the areas around the head. In addition, some headaches are clinical conditions of their own, and are not symptoms of other problems. Regardless of the type of headaches you’re experiencing, our acupuncture treatments frequently can provide relief.
How Can Acupuncture Relieve Headaches and Migraines?
Often, tension headaches result from chronic pain and stiffness in the upper back and neck. An acupuncture treatment can specifically target areas of pain by moving the stagnant energy (Qi) and blood, which is causing pain. Once the Qi (pronounced chee) and/or blood is flowing smoothly, the area of headache pain will be reduced or eliminated. In addition, the potent muscle relaxation qualities of acupuncture will lead to pain relief either during or following an acupuncture session. Acupuncture in and of itself, provides relaxation and tension reduction thereby producing a state of internal calmness.
Acupuncture treatments for migraine attacks are often more intensive. For this reason, our acupuncture techniques are designed to prevent migraines on a long-term basis. This is done by using acupuncture techniques to calm excitation of the central nervous system and eliminate accumulated stress. Multiple acupuncture sessions may be required for the purpose of establishing long-term migraine prevention.
How Are Migraine Acupuncture Treatments Applied?
As in all initial visits, we will assess your condition from a whole body perspective and discuss your headache and migraine patterns along with aspects of your lifestyle that may lead to muscle tension and headaches. Acupuncture sessions are given either in between migraines or in the midst of a migraine attack. Quite frequently, migraine sufferers report an initial pain level of ten out of ten (on a 1-10 scale) prior to the acupuncture treatment and a pain reduction of at least 50% (zero to five on a 1-10 scale) after the treatment.
Acupuncture needles are applied to certain points on the body in order to prevent spasms, relieve muscle stiffness and promote relaxation. Acupuncture techniques can lower stress levels, which are often responsible for headaches and migraines resulting from unconsciously tensing muscles. This creates a truly holistic approach that is proven to provide direct relief to many headache sufferers.
Over the course of additional acupuncture sessions, other points on areas of the body such as the head, abdomen, legs, arms and lower back are targeted. This can help with hormonal imbalances and other systemic dysfunctions.
